Transform the Passage Guide into the Ultimate Scripture Index

As you probably know, the Passage Guide is like a Super Wal-Mart. It's one-stop shopping, supplying you with most everything you need to study a biblical passage. You can also transform the Passage Guide into the ultimate Reference Browser or Scripture Index. You're going to love this. I guarantee it!

Create numerous search collections by choosing Tools | Define Collections (Create collections around subject matter, like My Theology Books, and also authors like My AW Tozer Books)

Open the Passage Guide at Tools | Bible Study | Passage Guide

On the Passage Guide Toolbar click Properties

In the Properties section select the box Collections

In the Collections area select the specific Collections you want the Passage Guide to search

Click OK

Now generate a Passage Guide report and notice the results. It lists your collections individually and the search hits in each book!

Pretty cool!

Speeding Up the Bible Word Study Report Documents

Do you notice that when you generate a Bible Word Study report for a Hebrew or Greek word that the report takes a few moments to complete. The report is not slow; it's just doing so much work. Here's a way to speed of the report:

Generate a report for a Hebrew or Greek word by right clicking on a word in the ESV Reverse Interlinear and selecting Bible Word Study "for your word"

After the report is complete click the minus sign ( - ) next to each section of the report except KeyLinks and Translation.

You have just paused the searching in all areas except KeyLinks and Translation.

The next time you generate a report these are the only two areas that automatically generate. If you need another section just click the plus sign ( + ) next to the section title.

This little trick greatly speeds up the process.

By the way the KeyLinks section gives you the definition of the word and the Translation section supplies you with the occurrences of the word and how it's translated in the ESV.

This is one of my favorite Libronix features!

Mac Matters

Logos Bible Software for Mac is off to a great start. I am getting a lot of e-mail regarding training materials for the Mac. Please visit www.mpseminars.com often because we'll be releasing new materials very soon.

Also, I am getting a lot of questions about whether Mac users should attend Camp Logos. We have prepared a special page to answer that question.

If you're a Mac user, though, here are a couple of tips that hopefully will come in handy:

When you're working in a resource window (Bible, commentary, dictionary, etc.) press the keystroke shortcut Command + Tab to select the current location box. Now just type your new reference. This just saves you from having to click the mouse in the box every time you want to jump to a new location.

While you're working in your Bible software choose Libronix DLS | Preferences | Appearance to customize your system.

Searching Schaeffer

March Madness 2009 is now history and the Complete Works of Francis Shaeffer emerged as championed. Now that you perhaps own this, resource what is the best way to mine its riches? To get you started I have created a search collection for you that you can download for free at www.mpseminars.com.

You can now search this collection by word or phrase or use the Reference Browser to locate Bible verses.

I suggest, however, you use the Basic Search dialog and conduct a "proximity search." Here's how it works. Based on John 13.35 Schaeffer often spoke of love being the "mark of a Christian." You of course could search for the phrase "mark of a Christian" but he may have written something like, "A Christian should bear the mark of love." He's discussing the same subject just using a different phrase. The proximity search solves the challenge.

Choose Search | Basic Search

In the In box, select your new Schaffer search collection that you have download from mpseminars.com

Type this in the search box: love within 7 words mark

This will locate every time the words love and mark occur within seven words of each other regardless of the exact phrasing.

Try the same search with this search string: truth within 8 words total

Enjoy this incredible resource!

Searching a Few Bibles at Once

When you use the Bible Search dialog you'll notice you can search one Bible at a time or all of your Bibles. What if, however, you want to search more than one, but not all of your Bibles? For example, you only want to search the ESV, NKJV, and KJV.

You have two options:

First, you could open onto the screen those three Bibles.
Then in the Bible Search dialog select All Open Bibles from the Bibles drop down list.

Or you could choose Tools | Define Collections to create a collection with those three Bibles in it.
Then in the Bible Search dialog select that collection from the Bibles drop down list.

Making Bible Hyperlinks in the Sermon File Addin

If you own the Sermon File Addin (SFA) you know that when you compile your sermons and illustrations all of the Bible references are automatically hyperlinked. In other words if you have John 3:16 or Jn 3.16 it becomes a blue hotspot to jump to that verse.

What if, however, you say something like this in your original sermon document:

Please turn in your Bible to John 3. Look at verse 16.

John 3 will be hyperlinked but verse 16 will not be. The reference has to be recognizable to automatically be hyperlinked.

The work around is to type this in the left hand Sermon or Illustration Text pane of the SFA document:

Please turn in your Bible to John 3. Look at [[verse 16|bible:Jn 3:16]].

You can hyperlink any text to a Bible verse with this formula:

Enclose the entire formula in double brackets
Type the text as you want it to appear in the compiled document
Type the pipe symbol ( | ) which is usually above the backlash above the Enter key on the keyboard
Type the recognizable Bible reference to the right of the pipe.

Cycle Open Windows with Ctrl + Tab

A handy Libronix keystroke to remember is Ctrl + Tab which cycles you through the open windows on the screen (by the way: Alt + Tab is a Windows keystroke that cycles you through open programs). If, however, you have minimized a window with the first of the three buttons in the upper right hand corner of the resource window, then that minimized window will not be part of the cycle.

To include that window in the Ctrl + Tab cycle just manually resize the window with your mouse rather than using the minimize button. When the window is activated with the Ctrl + Tab keystroke, use the middle of the three buttons in the upper right hand corner to restore up and restore down the window. Using this middle button enables the window to remain a part of the cycle.

Searching Biblical World in Pictures

A question I am often asked is: What pictures of the Holy Land are available in the Libronix format? Currently the best resource is The Biblical World in Pictures containing hundreds of images that can be used in PowerPoint and presentation software like EasyWorship.

While the images are stunning, finding just the right one can be difficult. For example, let's say you're looking for an image related to Jericho. Since the book is not topically indexed it can't be searched with the Topic Browser. In addition, the book not only contains images, but also descriptions and explanations of the pictures. Thus, if you use the Basic Search to execute a word search for Jericho you'll receive over 700 hits! There are not 700 pictures of Jericho in the resource. You just located the word Jericho.

While there is no "easy" way to search just the images here is a way that is not too difficult. The extra steps will be rewarded with beautiful pictures.

Open The Biblical World in Pictures (this resource is not in any Logos base collection and must be purchased separately)

Choose Search | Basic Search

Select The Biblical World in Pictures from the In drop down list

Type this query in the Search box: "Complete List of Images" Jericho

Click Search

The resource contains a page called Complete List of Images which lists by title all of the pictures in the book. This search query is performing an AND search looking for all of the articles containing both the phrase Complete List of Images and the word Jericho.

When the Search Results window opens click Aligned Hits in Context to list all of the hits. Click on each hit one at a time to go through the resource until you find the picture you want.

After you do this a time or two it will be very painless and quick.

Parallel Passages and the Passage Guide

Some events in the Bible are recorded in more than one location. The different verses that describe the same biblical event are called parallel passages. The resources listing the parallel passages are called harmonies. Logos combines these two into an automated report called Parallel Passages and Harmonies located at Tools | Bible Comparison.

Regarding this report I recently received this question:

Is there a way to go from the passage I am studying to that particular passage in a Harmony? I find myself mostly skipping the Harmonies of the OT and NT because it takes so long to find what I want there.

Excellent question! Hopefully the answer will be helpful to you:

The Passage Guide is the solution for the question.

Open the Passage Guide (PG) from the toolbar or at Tools | Bible Study | Passage Guide

Open a Bible

Tile the windows at Window | Tile Vertically

Link the PG and Bible to Set A using the chain link icon on each window

Jump to a location in your Bible like Ex 20 and you'll notice the PG go there as well

One section of the PG is Parallel Passages and Harmonies (PPH)

Obviously the PG is giving you a lot more info than PPH. You have 2 choices to limit the info in the PG

You can click the Properties icon on the PG and uncheck the information you don't want to appear.

OR

Generate a complete PG report like you did above for Ex 20

Click the minus sign (-) next to each section in the report like Commentaries, Cross References, etc. This will turn the minus sign to a plus sign (+) and pause the search for that section. When you need the information just click the plus sign.

For example, click all of the minus signs in the report except PPH. Go to Mt 16.18 in your Bible and the PG only lists the PPH with all of the other sections still collapsed!

Type a Name for category such as Family or Church

Click OK

Repeat these steps for additional categories

Click OK

To place an existing prayer item in a different Category:

Select All from the drop down Category list to display all of the prayer items

Double click the prayer item you wish to file in a Category

On the Edit Prayer Item window select a Category from the drop down list

Click OK
