Making Bible Hyperlinks in the Sermon File Addin

If you own the Sermon File Addin (SFA) you know that when you compile your sermons and illustrations all of the Bible references are automatically hyperlinked. In other words if you have John 3:16 or Jn 3.16 it becomes a blue hotspot to jump to that verse.

What if, however, you say something like this in your original sermon document:

Please turn in your Bible to John 3. Look at verse 16.

John 3 will be hyperlinked but verse 16 will not be. The reference has to be recognizable to automatically be hyperlinked.

The work around is to type this in the left hand Sermon or Illustration Text pane of the SFA document:

Please turn in your Bible to John 3. Look at [[verse 16|bible:Jn 3:16]].

You can hyperlink any text to a Bible verse with this formula:

  • Enclose the entire formula in double brackets
Type the text as you want it to appear in the compiled document
Type the pipe symbol ( | ) which is usually above the backlash above the Enter key on the keyboard
Type the recognizable Bible reference to the right of the pipe.

I just purchased Sermon File Addin. I am now transferring my sermons to the program.
